Finding important pages with too few internal links
A page with few internal links may be hard for readers to find, even if its content is strong.
Start with pages that support a real reader or business task, such as main service pages, product pages or a contact page. Keep current pages that answer a distinct question and belong in a clear topic group; treat deliberately isolated confirmation pages differently. Google Search Console’s Performance > Pages report can help identify low-performing URLs to inspect, but performance alone does not establish importance.
In Google Search Console, open Links > Internal links > Top linked pages and compare the priority URLs with the pages shown there. The report helps identify important pages receiving relatively few internal links, but use a crawl as well to check for pages with no inbound links.
For a defined screening cutoff, use Labrika’s “Landing pages with not enough inbound links (< 5)” report. It shows inbound and outbound internal-link counts for landing pages with fewer than five inbound links. Treat five as that report’s threshold, not a universal definition of too few.
SEO Scout’s internal-link tools can filter for pages with low or no inbound links. They also distinguish pages with few in-content links from links in navigation and footers. Record counts by page and link type, including navigation, hub pages and article copy, so a sitewide link does not hide a weak reader journey.
For an inventory cross-check, run Web Aloha’s Internal Link Analyzer and supply a sitemap or URL list. It crawls up to 100 HTML pages and can compare the crawl with up to 1,000 same-host URLs. Review the CSV’s linking-page counts and flags for orphan candidates, one linking page and depth of 4+; these are review cues, not verified whole-site orphan pages.
Prioritise URLs that support a real task and have few inbound links, especially pages with none or only one linking source. Check that each remains current, answers a distinct question and belongs in the site’s topic structure before treating its link count as a problem.
After changes, run the crawl again and compare inbound counts and linking pages. A higher count alone does not show whether readers can find the page more easily.
